In a surprising diplomatic move, President Donald J. Trump has appointed Metro Detroit businessman Mark Savaya as the new United States Special Envoy to the Republic of Iraq. The announcement was made on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, where the president highlighted Savaya’s personal ties to Iraq and his role in recent political efforts in Michigan.
Savaya, a Michigan-based cannabis industry entrepreneur, built his reputation as the founder of the Leaf and Bud dispensary chain, known locally for its bold billboard advertising across Detroit’s 8 Mile Road. The marketing push drew community attention and even local debate over advertising regulations.
Trump praised Savaya’s “deep understanding of the Iraq–U.S. relationship” and cited his connections within the region as key assets for the new role. According to the president’s statement, Savaya also played a part in Trump’s 2024 election campaign in Michigan, helping to mobilize support among Muslim American voters in the state.
In response to the appointment, Savaya expressed gratitude on social media, saying he was “deeply humbled, honored and grateful” for the opportunity. He pledged to work toward strengthened cooperation and communication between the United States and Iraq.
Born in Iraq and raised in the United States, Savaya is a member of the Chaldean-American community in Southeastern Michigan, one of the largest Chaldean populations outside the Middle East. His business success and community engagement helped bring national attention ahead of his diplomatic appointment.
While the role of special envoy does not always require Senate confirmation, it places Savaya in a high-level diplomatic position focused on strengthening U.S.–Iraq ties, facilitating dialogue on political cooperation, security partnership and economic priorities.
Savaya’s appointment has generated discussion on both sides of the Atlantic. Some praised the decision as a bridge between American communities and Iraqi leadership, emphasizing the value of cultural background and regional insight. Others questioned whether his business background, instead of formal government experience, sets a new precedent for diplomatic postings.
Iraqi political leaders including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani welcomed the announcement, calling it an “important step” and highlighting the significance of Savaya’s heritage in advancing bilateral cooperation.
