If you could, for a moment, reach back to a time before the internet, Twitter, commercial space rockets, the robot that did surgery on a grape, all of it. Back to a time when the Earth was basically new and the sun had basically just begun to come up on humanity: The ’80s! You’ll remember that Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson dated for roughly four years. They met on the set of King Arthur medieval fantasy film Excalibur. As Neeson once put it himself: “Can you imagine riding horses in shiny suits of armor, having sword fights and stuff, and you’re falling in love with Helen Mirren?”
Sounds magical. It also sounds like Mirren fondly remembers that time as well. She told AARP, in an interview for 1923, her Yellowstone prequel alongside Harrison Ford, that she and Neeson were certainly in love all those years ago.
“Then I went through a phase of making men’s shirts,” the dame explained while on an extended riff about her old hobby of making clothes. “All my boyfriends had to have a shirt made by me.”
So Liam Neeson has a shirt, though he no longer has Helen Mirren. After confirming that Neeson indeed has a shirt she made, Mirren said, “We loved each other. We were not meant to be together in that way, but we loved each other very, very much. I love him deeply to this day. He’s such an amazing guy.”
In another, less recent interview on Graham Norton, Neeson and Mirren appeared together. Neeson spoke of the moment he fell in love or something like it.
“I remember being on the set…. The first AD or the second AD said, ‘Would you like to meet Helen Mirren.’ I said, ‘Yeah, would love to.’ She walked from 100 yards away dressed as Morgana le Fay, and Ciarán [Hinds] is my oldest friend, and we both went, ‘Fuck,’” Neeson recalled. “I was smitten. I think Ciarán was smitten too, but I was certainly smitten!”
“I never knew that,” Mirren responded. “You’ve never told me that before. That’s amazing.”
With both sides of this love affair confessed, the only step left here is a reveal of the ‘fits. Let’s see the shirt Neeson.
